The Ilhas do Rio Project invites readers to know the results of years of scientific research in the insular ecosystems of Rio de Janeiro’s metropolitan region. A set of 302 species of algae, invertebrates, fishes, birds and cetaceans is herein presented through almost 500 photographs, revealing the islands’ unique marine biodiversity. Furthermore, this guide brings precious tips, maps and sketches of 10 diving sites in Cagarras Islands Natural Monument, Rasa and Cotunduba islands, Tijucas and Maricás archipelagos.
Creating an attractive editorial project for a bilingual book, organized into four main sections for two audiences. The first section presents the history and work of the Rio Islands Project, highlighting its achievements and ongoing efforts. The second section offers a unique and detailed guide to all the diving spots around the islands near Rio. The third section catalogues marine biodiversity through the Rio Islands Project’s monitoring program. The final section, Tips and Testimonials, guides how to interact responsibly with marine life and offers advice on hiring legal scuba diving operators.
I strategically placed the folder map at the centre of the third section, facilitating the interaction and the technical production process. Furthermore, the book uses visual resources, including iconographic drawings and carefully chosen typography, to present technical information about species in a clear and accessible way. Additionally, it features satellite locations from Google Maps diving spots and QR codes for quick access to described links. A downloadable PDF version of the book is also available.
Ilhas do Rio Project distributed almost 1.000 copies of the printed book to educational institutions and libraries in several countries. Additionally, the book received over 14 spontaneous media disseminations on digital and open TV channels, radio, and relevant newspapers in Brazil.
In 2020, the Marine Biodiversity and Diving Guide to the Island of Rio was a Top 10 finalist in the Science Category of the 62nd Jabuti Award. The award, which is divided into 20 categories, became the most important literature award in Brazil and Latin America. The 62nd Edition received a record number of almost 2.600 applications.
